Cockles are Rising to the challenge
A group of avid Brentwood Town supporters who took up darts to pass the time away off-season are on the brink of a league cup double.
The Rising Cockles darts team, who play at the Rising Sun pub in Ongar Road, Brentwood have already won Division Four of the Ingatestone & District League and take 7-5 lead into the second leg of the league cup final, which will be finished this week.
Captain Grant Hammond, 42 who runs the Cheeky Cockle stall outside the pub, is the only member of the 10 strong group to have played darts at a higher level so is surprised with how well, they have done in their first few months together.
"It's amazing," he said. "I'm really shocked as half the lads had never even thrown a dart before."
The team wear bright pink shirts after it was suggested one night during a boozy session in the pub.
